So this is the legendary Westvleteren 12.
The supposed best beer in the world.
And I have to say it’s pretty good.
For starters I’m surprised by the aroma, which is very subtle where I was expecting a big punch on the nose.
It’s a warm and woody smell of roast nuts and candy sugar.
There’s a lovely treacle coated chewy biscuit dough malt that sticks to your teeth and leaves a hint of chocolate and forest fruits as it disappears, and there’s a crunchy, leafy wander through autumnal countryside from the hops.
The finish is resinous and gently bitter.
Wesvleteren 12 is a very good beer indeed, but the best beer in the world?
I fear it may have got its reputation from the clever marketing that only allows you to get hold of it by trying really hard (or these days, going to Shrewsbury).
Personally, I prefer a Rochefort.
