Brouwerij St. Bernardus Prior 8 (8%)

Oh, hello!
I may not be meant to find bald old monks attractive  but I have to admit that seeing the old chap on this brewery’s labels always gets me a little hot under the collar.
And this is why.
Prior 8 is super.
An eight percent beer that’s full of fruity, malty goodness, a big hit of liquorice, pear juice and cloves and a smell that’s all Bramley apples, brioche and marzipan.
The malts are more fruity than biscuity, thought there’s a whole cupboard full of shortbread in here it’s overwhelmed by runny honey and red berries.
The hops are beautifully crisp hedgerow leaves and nettle stings that provide enough edge to leave a finish that’s both dry and full and sticky.
Now, about that monk.
