Rogue Ales Roguenbier Rye (5.8%)

Roguenbier Rye AleI’m a sucker for a rye beer but this one took me a little by surprise.
I think I’ve said before, I’m not one for trawling the internet finding out about stuff.
Especially about beer.
I’d rather try something without too much background information.
So, is this Rogue’s take on a Rauchbier?
It certainly has a nice smoky malt and a smell that made my four year old daughter say, “it’ a bit bacon.”
She’s right too, though her grammar could do with some work.
The smell is wood smoked, honeyed bacon.
There’s a good earthiness from the rye, a dark treacle toffee and some liquorice sticks dipped in chocolate.
The Independent hops give a green tomato chutney, pine resin and flower petal crisp pithiness, and the finish is aniseed balls, balsamic vinegar and stinging nettles.
Zehr gut, ja?
