About eighteen months or so ago I got hold of a whole range of beer from this brewery and they were all flat and thin and most of them went down the sink.
The result was that my heart sank a little when I found this in a mixed case from Best of British Beer last week.
But Mexi-Cocoa is superb.
Thick and deep and with a smell that’s full of chocolate and vanilla – It’s a chocolate and vanilla stout after all – there’s a subtle chilli piquancy as you drink, prickling at you and cutting across the tongue coating creamy chocolate and super vanilla pod richness.
About halfway down I realised Mexi-Cocoa was get super thick and chewy and glimpsed at the ingredients.
Lactose.
This is a Milk Stout, just to give an extra sumptuous sticky sweetness.
There are probably hops in here somewhere, but they’re hard to find as everything is focussed into a whisky heat boozy vanilla chocolate loveliness.
Late last night this was the perfect beer to sink comfortably into.
