Pogonophobia – Fear Of Beards – is a Belgian Red Ale and it’s superb.
It pours an unsurprising red and smells of fruit marmalade and, to be honest, something delicious that I can’t quite put my finger on.
This beer has been aged in red wine barrels and then dry hopped and the result is a flavour that includes the amazing thing that I can’t describe.
There’s red berries and grape skins, biscuits, honey and battery acid.
The hops are sharp and green and herbal, and there’s a spicy yeast body that makes Pogonophobia big and round and meaty.
This is a lovely beer and I just wish I could work out what that lovely, indescribably flavour and smell is.
Perhaps it’s magic.
