New English Brewing Co. Dragoon (6.9%)

DragoonWell now, this is a lovely warming beer for a cold winter’s evening.
Dragoon is an Amber Ale that’s heavy with redwood resin, bran flakes and rum.
The aroma is leather saddlebags stuffed with toffee and, oddly but not unpleasantly, Pepsi, and the beer sits a deep chestnut red in my glass.
Dragoon is all about its hefty malting but there are hops too.
They’re crunchy and brown, dry pithy and bitter with orange rind and woodland leaf litter.
And running through all of this is a big liquorice and sultana boozy warmth that makes Dragoon feel satisfyingly boozy regardless of whether it’s a 6.9% or a 5.8% beer*.
