Buxton Brewery Dragon Tips (8.9%)

Dragon TipsDragon Tips is brewed with maple syrup, chillies and bacon, and is a collaboration with Wilderness Brewery of Arizona.
Most importantly, it’s a super little bottle of Stout, though it’s not quite what I expected.
You see, what I expected was a fiery smoky bacon beauty with sweet edges, but what I found is a very subtle beer.
The aroma is fruit compote and chocolate, and the beer poured an inky black with a thick cappuccino head.
The malting is bitter dark chocolate, Marmite, molasses and biscuits, and the maple syrup makes everything rich and round and sticky.
The bacon adds only the lightest smokiness and the chilli that I thought would make my eyes water, provides a gently piquant background heat.
So what I thought would be a belting hot kick in the pants turned out to be a rather subdued and incredibly classy little bottle of beer.
