Fireman’s Brew Brunette Beer (8%)

Brunette BeerI was lulled into a false sense of security by this beer last Saturday afternoon.
According to Ales By Mail’s import label this beer is 5.5%, but on opening it I noticed that the beer’s own label puts it at 8%.
That’s a big difference.
And let me tell you, it made ironing interesting.
This is a big digestive biscuit, chocolate and prune beer.
There’s loads of treacle and tamarind too, and there’s a good red leaf autumnal hop that’s resinous and spicy with a decent grapefruit zest and orange marmalade bitterness.
The body isn’t quite as heavy as I might expect from an 8% beer, and it goes down rather too easily.
And then all of a sudden it hit me.
This is a rather good Double Bock.
