Blue Monkey’s Red Hopped Ale is rather nice, if a little cloying, pouring a deep cherry red and smelling of rich red fruit and toffee.
The malting is treacle tart, honey and biscuits, at once crumbly and chewy, soft and sweet.
There’s a sticky woody resinous sap from the hops, which along with tamarind, sharp nettle leaves, pumpkin, lime and crunchy leaf litter make for a multi layered beer.
The finish is sticky and bitter, though to be honest everything starts to get a bit too gloopy towards the end, and though I enjoyed it I was mighty pleased it was over by the time I had had my last mouthful.
