Brewed in collaboration with Spain’s Nómada Brewery, Frate Nero is an Imperial India Coffee Stout that’s really rather good.
Pouring an inky black, the beer smells of prunes and damsons in treacle, and there’s a big gooey molasses, rum, honey and treacle malt, with biscuits and burned toast too, followed by a good crunchy autumnal leaf litter hop that’s bitter and crisp and tongue witheringly pithy.
The coffee rumbles away underneath and there’s a very good brandy heat from the alcohol before the finish comes on long and round and rich with toffee coated cherries.
Very good indeed.
