What an amazing introduction to a brewery this is.
Brewed with Belgian sugar syrup, lactose and Hebridean sea salt, Chew Chew is a Salted Caramel Milk Stout.
Yes, that’s right, a Salted Caramel Milk Stout.
Pouring a deep dark purple brown, the aroma is like standing in Thorntons eating plums, it’s creamy, sweet, warm and chocolatey, a smell that makes you want to take a large mouthful.
The malting is big and round and heavy with treacle tart, plum pudding and well baked shortcrust pastry, and there’s a rather nice damson bitterness at the edges.
The alcohol adds a chest warming heat that pushes the flavours forward and makes the sea salt pop out at you as the hops slap you about with a fresh bouquet of green herbal leaves, lemon rind and dandelion and burdock, liquorice goodness.
All this makes for a beer with a finish that’s sticky and sensual, bitter, sweet and salty.
What a lovely beer this is.
