Fourpure’s Winter Ale hides its alcohol frighteningly well, and it’s brewed with rye and brown sugar which makes me very happy indeed.
It pours a deep dark mahogany red and smells of fence posts and spiced red fruit.
The malting is rich and round and earthy, all treacle and bran flakes, a hint of marmite and a dab of honey, and the hops are crunchy crisp red autumn leaf litter, pithy wood sap, hazel and hedgerow, while the brown sugar adds a burned caramel sweetness to the snappy bitter finish.
Very good indeed.
