Hawkshead Brewery Northern Imperial Stout (9.5%)

Northern Imperial StoutThis is a big round and very satisfying Imperial Stout that pours tar black with a tiny cappuccino head and smells of plum compote and cherry brandy.
The malting here is deep and dark and rich, full of burned toast and runny honey, treacle tart, dates, figs and liquorice root.
Everything is thick and creamy, chewy and mouth filling, edged by singed toffee brittle and given a much needed fresh herbal snap by the Chinook and Jester hops.
A freshly brewed espresso hits you full in the face and the warmth of boozy whisky heat makes for a finish that’s long and sticky and very satisfying.
Very good indeed.
