Brewed in collaboration with Heretic Brewing of California, this is an enormous, full blooded Brown Ale.
In fact, I hadn’t noticed its ABV before I opened it or I may have saved it for the weekend rather than make it my Wednesday evening tipple, but once it was open and I’d poured the deep conker brown liquid with its thick fluffy head into my glass there was no going back.
The smell is brandy, fence posts and hazelnuts, and taking a swig you find a big round gloopy malting packed with thick toffee, brown bread, pumpernickel and treacle tart.
There’s tamarind too, sticky and slightly bitter, and it leads you neatly into the orange marmalade, woodworking benches, pine cones and grapefruit of the hops.
All of this makes for a woody, pithy and very satisfying beer with a big bitter hit right at the end.
