Time & Tide Brewing Co. The Kraken (7.4%)

A great big chewy Stout and a shed load of coffee.
There’s a fair bit of this style of beer around at the moment and much of it doesn’t quite get the balance right between the beer and the coffee.
But The Kraken does.
Pouring an inky black with a foamy cappuccino head, the smell is black coffee and plum jam.
Taking a swig you find molasses, treacle tart, pancakes and vanilla rich bran biscuits, and there’s even a good swipe of crunchy and brittle hedgerow hops to add a much needed sharpness to the edges of the beer.
And then there’s the warm and woody richness of the coffee, it’s dark and sexy but unlike so many others it’s not eye-poppingly strong and overbearing.
This is super.
