Mad Hatter Brewing Co. Lightning Sombrero (8.5%)

Lightning Sombrero is a collaboration with Wild Weather Ales.
It’s a Double IPA brewed with gooseberries and it’s very good indeed.
In fact it is so good that I’d rather be drinking it than writing about it.
I have a lovely record on, Lol Coxhill’s Joy Of Paranoia, if you were wondering, and the beer goes very well with it.
Both are beautiful pieces of work, they challenge and excite, they’re deep and interesting and multi layered.
Lightning Sombrero packs a solid malt punch with toffee and dates, fig rolls and honey brioche, and the hops slap your cheeks with stinging nettles and lemon zest, sherbet, lime leaves and mango.
And all the while the gooseberries add a dry and pithy, slightly tart fruitiness that is dizzyingly bright and bitter in the finish.
