Almost certainly the best Imperial Russian Stout I’ve ever tried, Frontaal’s take on the style is absolutely sublime.
It pours a thick gluey road tar black with a creamy cappuccino head and smells of liquorice root nd rubber balls.
The malting is deep and rich and sexy, packed with plum jam and espresso, chocolate ice cream, pancakes and treacle tart, while the hops add a seductive slap of pithy green woodland foliage and a steely gin and tonic brightness that’s fuelled by a brandy and rum baba boozy Syllabub creaminess that leads you to the hefty dry cocoa and alcohol heat of the finish.
In a word, astonishing.
