If you want to win me over you can do much worse than name-checking a Captain Beefheart song.
Crafty Devil have won me over by doing just this and coupling it with a rather fine Coffee Milk Stout.
It’s deep and dark, pouring a purple brown with a fluffy cappuccino head and smelling of prunes and fresh filter coffee, rich and round and inviting.
Diving in you find a rich treacle tart, molasses and tamarind malt, some honey, shortcake and lightly salted caramel, as well as a little kick of pithy mown lawns, zingy lemon zest and garden herbs that add some much needed brightness as the robust woody cherry sonte flavours of the coffee build, sweetened by the vanilla stickiness of the lactose.
Very good indeed.
