Dig Brewing Co. California (5.2%)

California is a Blueberry Milkshake IPA brewed in the Digbeth area of Birmingham.
It’s a bit of Birmingham that is oddly dear to my heart as I used to go, in the 1980’s, to The Click Club at Burberries, a super spot for watching indie bands, and I used to find it easier parking around Digbeth than closer to the venue.
But this is a beer review, so here goes.
California pours a rather pleasing purple with a frothy little head and smells of honey doused red berries.
There’s a decent caramel and shortcake malting in the beer’s body, and the hops provide a snap of pithy bitter hedgerow herbal greenery.
But it’s the mix of vanilla ice creaminess of the body and the blueberry juice that takes control here, providing a very nice smooth fruity spin sugar finish, made all the more impressive by the lack of lactose in the brew.
At least it isn’t listed in the ingredients.
Decent.
